1955 Western Electric Model 500 – Cherry Red – Gray Cords

I have made postings about Cherry Red phones in the past on this site because it is one of the most requested colors. But truthfully I have a soft spot in my heart for them as well.

I refurbished this telephone several months back. It has turned out to be a favorite in my collection, because it is Cherry Red (Western Electric Color Code -53) and because it was made just a few days before I was born in April of 1955. Although I have had several other Cherry Red soft plastic Western Electric model 500’s in the past this was the first that I came upon with a original neutral gray straight handset cord. Of course there is a matching neutral gray line cord as well. On the end of that line cord is the original four-prong plug. Before the colored plastic phones had matching cordage, neutral gray cords were used.

The eBay seller I bought the phone from said he was going through an elderly family members “junk” and since this phone was on the top of the pile decided to sell if first. He thought it was of little value and figured if it didn’t sell he would let his kids play with it. The rest as they say is history.

Please take a moment to look at the photo album I put together to showcase this beautiful Vintage Rotary Phone.
